Fresh Start
This successful social enterprise offers supported work experience and apprenticeships to vulnerable people who have difficulty gaining access to employment. This might for example be because of long term unemployment or a disability.
Fresh Start Events is a catering social enterprise which provides nutritious and affordable hot lunches at local residential homes for the elderly. Under the guidance of an experienced chef, those on the Fresh Start programme learn the skills to prepare, cook and serve food to the public aiming for professional standards. Fresh Start learners can gain valuable catering qualifications from participating in the programme.
The aim is to teach people how to prepare first class meals, thus equipping them with valuable life skills (eg. communication skills, team-work) and making them more employable.
Fresh Start Events also offers a corporate service, so that organisations planning to order food for delivery to their work place for a meeting or special event can choose Fresh Start rather than a profit-making catering company. In this way, organisations can show their corporate and social responsibility and community engagement without having to set up a special CSR budget.
In November 2010 Fresh Start won £50,000 from the People’s Millions grant programme (run by the Big Lottery Fund) to buy a refrigerated van and essential equipment. This financial support will enable it to expand the food services it offers, thereby giving Fresh Start the opportunity to offer supported work experience to more vulnerable young people and adults.
